We ask you lots of questions so we can understand your business and the goals for your site. The questionnaire becomes our guide for site layout, look and feel, and other important elements. It also helps you to think through your core offerings, your target audience, and how your site fits into your overall marketing plan.

Clients often tell us that going through the questionnaire gives them much-needed clarity about their business. Cool.

Up to three hours to discuss your site design and goals

After you return the Web Site Questionnaire, we’ll set up phone calls to discuss your answers. We’ll nail down what you want to accomplish through your site and ways to meet those goals. We’ll also visit sites you really like and talk about why you like them.

Domain name assistance

We’ll help you come up with the perfect domain name. It’s a good idea to include keywords in the domain name, if possible. We’ll also give you another tip that makes Google happy.

Hosting service selection

We’ll recommend our favorite low-cost hosting services, and we can walk you through the sign-up if you prefer. It’s best to register your domain through the hosting service — it’s easy and saves a few steps. Plus you get the domain name renewal for free with annual hosting plans. (Please do NOT get hosting at GoDaddy. Please.)

Premium WordPress theme

We use premium themes from top providers, including WooThemes. These themes are well-coded, standards-compliant and work on all browsers. We’ll select a theme to use as our starting point, and then customize it based on your design preferences and site goals.

Custom site header

Based on your input, we’ll design up to three headers for you to choose from. The header will appear on every page of your site.

Page creation

We’ll create and format up to 10 pages with the text you supply (limited to 1000 words per page). We’ll also select and purchase up to 5 images from istockphoto.com, dreamstime.com or other stock photo site to use for illustration. We’ll also show you how to create and format pages.

If you need assistance with writing or editing your Web site copy, we’ll be happy to provide those services. You can save by purchasing blocks of time (for example, 10 hours for $550). Ask for details.

Contact form

We’ll add a handy-dandy simple contact form upon request at no extra charge. That’s right — it’s a freebie because the form feature is baked into your WordPress premium theme.

Site search

Upon request, we’ll add a search box for visitors to easily find info on your site. No extra charge because this feature is baked into your WordPress premium theme! (See why we love WordPress premium themes?)

Google map

If you want people to come to your place of business, we can add a Google map to make their journey easier.

Blog

Because WordPress is also a blogging platform, your site comes with a built-in blog (imagine that). To get your blog ready, we’ll do a bit of configuring and add a blog link to the menu bar. You can use your blog for news, articles, stories, whatever you’d like. Search engines love fresh content from blogs and look favorably upon the active blogger.

Basic search engine optimization (SEO)

Using up to 5 keywords/phrases, we’ll optimize your site for the search engines to find and index your content. We’ll also give you tips for keeping the search engine spiders happy. The goal is to get you on the first page of Google results for keyword searches.

Note that Google top placement is not guaranteed but highly likely if you have little competition for the keywords.

Site visitor statistics

To keep an eye on your site traffic, we’ll set up your free account at Statcounter.com or Google Analytics and install tracking code on your site. If you opt for Google Analytics, we’ll also configure your WordPress dashboard to display visitor statistics.

WordPress plugins

Plugins provide extra functionality that every WordPress site needs. We’ll install must-have plugins, such as spam blocking, easy SEO, and smartphone display.

WordPress training

If you know how to use Microsoft Word, learning WordPress will be easy as banana cream pie! In one or two short training sessions, we’ll show you how to create and edit Web site pages, add images and videos, add pages to the main menu, and work with sidebar content. Planning to blog? We’ll show you how to create blog posts, create categories and keyword tags, and work with visitor comments. And if you want more training or need a refresher, we’ll point you to super-duper WordPress training videos.

WordPress updates and backups

The good folks at WordPress constantly improve the software and provide updates. Before upgrading WordPress, your site needs to be backed up and ready to be restored in case something goes wrong. It’s also good practice to do regular backups. This is a royal pain, unless you know the shortcuts! We take care of upgrades and backups for 1 year from site go-live. Backups will be safely stored on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3).
